Abstract
BARAHONA-CUBILLO, Juan and ROJAS-BRENES, Cinthya. Práctica de la odontología en el Recinto de Paraíso, Sede del Atlántico, Universidad de Costa Rica. InterSedes [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.38, pp.57-67. ISSN 2215-2458. http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/isucr.v18i38.32668.
In the practical External Clinical course taught at the Paraíso Branch of Universidad de Costa Rica, the sixth-year students of the program of dentistry apply the knowledge they acquire in previous years to various scenarios. The population served is mainly made up of college students, though it also includes administrative staff and faculty of the Paraíso Branch, people from the community and residents of Ciudad de los Niños (a technical high school located in Agua Caliente, Cartago). The activities developed by dentistry students are diverse as they must provide dental care, such as anamnesis, clinical examination, intraoral radiographs, dental biofilm indexes, oral hygiene instructions, prophylaxis, topical fluoride, as well as sealants of pits and fissures, operative dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, exodontia and oral surgery. Additionally, during the course, other varied activities are carried out, such as promotion of health through educational lectures, oral attention in different institutions, field trips to the Cabécar-Chirripó Indigenous Reserve, research projects, among others. Rotation in the External Clinical course at the Paraíso Branch becomes a space where students can grow within an environment similar to the one they will find after graduation, where they have the opportunity to project into the community, promote oral health, and provide care for different population groups, thus allowing a major contribution to the comprehensive professional training in dentistry.
