Abstract

PEREZ ROJAS, Nelson; DIAZ QUESADA, Fátima  and  SOLANO MORAGA, Sigrid. Identification of Inputs for the Development of Verbal Reasoning in Students from Schools with a Low Social Economic Profile. Comunicación [online]. 2023, vol.32, n.2, pp.19-25. ISSN 1659-3820.

This study analyzed the content of twenty items of the practices of the academic aptitude tests of the University of Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Institute of Technology to determine the presence of analogy tasks, inference problems, logical reasoning, vocabulary and reading comprehension. This document is the result of an extension project on the topic discussed herein, conducted at the Costa Rican Institute of Technology. The results revealed that logical reasoning and reading comprehension are the most relevant skills in these practices, while inference problems and vocabulary have a lower incidence, and analogies do not appear in the analyzed items. The agreement between the two judges was measured by Cohen’s kappa coefficient. A perfect agreement was demonstrated in the classification of analogy and reading comprehension tasks, moderate for inference and logical reasoning problems, and fair for vocabulary. It is proposed in the discussion that the findings of this work are useful in the formulation of strategies and materials for the development of verbal reasoning in students of Diversified Education in schools with a low social-economic profile.
