Abstract
GRANADOS-ZUNIGA, Jorge. The formation of dental students in biochemistry: a challenge for university teaching in the production of a textbook. Rev. Actual. Investig. Educ [online]. 2017, vol.17, n.2, pp.282-298. ISSN 1409-4703. http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/aie.v17i2.28677.
Biochemistry training for dental students is a challenge for teaching at the University of Costa Rica. To try to address this problem it was proposed to write a biochemistry textbook specifically for that area of health sciences. An assessment of students’ and teachers’ preferences regarding the possible features of the text was made, programs of courses offered during the period between 1971 and 2014 were consulted, a questionnaire was applied to the active students who were receiving the course and a focus group was held with the teachers of the course, in both cases during the first half of 2016. The results indicate that there are no coincidences related to what students and teachers consider most relevant issues, there is no frequent use of textbooks from respondents and these students prefer to use electronic books instead of printed ones. It is concluded that training in biochemistry could be improved from the development of a textbook, but it is need to build consensus among teachers and students about its contents. Furthermore, attention should be paid to the clarity of the language used and the relevance to the professional practice of the selected content.
