Abstract
CARPIO BRENES, María de los Ángeles. Effectiveness of pictophonic strategies in the acquisition of reading decodification in costa rican students. Rev. Actual. Investig. Educ [online]. 2014, vol.14, n.1, pp.202-235. ISSN 1409-4703.
This article presents the results of an experimental study with pre-post design in a control group, which was made in order to test the most effective strategy in the acquisition of reading in six groups of first graders (Experimental Group) of three Costa Rican public elementary schools of Core One, Circuit 05 of the Educational Cartago Region, Costa Rica who were instructed with Pictophonic Strategy (a method that stimulates a dual process of learning to read by associating the grapheme with a picture that represents it, and with the keyword phoneme) compared with six groups of three elementary schools (Control Group) in the same school zone, who were instructed with Eclectic method (global trend-syllabic), proposed by the Ministry of Education (MEP). To test the acquisition of reading of first grade students during the school year 2010, two tests were applied in November of that year, a test called Syllabic Register made from the Costa Rican test LEA, and another one called Word Register designed from the Spanish tests PEREL, PROLEC and LEE. The results show greater identification of direct, inverse, mixed and consonant syllables, and a higher percentage of words read by the students of the experimental group compared with the control group, This shows that the acquisition of reading in first grade depends on the method used.
