Abstract

MARRERO PENICHE, Gretel. The Need to Reclaim a Gender Perspective in Education. Educación [online]. 2019, vol.43, n.2, pp.627-643. ISSN 2215-2644.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/revedu.v43i2.32426.

The educational sector, as many others, has been witness to sexist practices that have historically led to gender inequality. This analysis bases its argument on the need to assess the importance of executing feminist thought and gender perspectives in Education as essential instruments to expose and report gender inequalities and is divided into two sections: Establish a theoretical baseline of feminist epistemology to better understand educational processes from a gender perspective and look at the different ways that feminist theory can be used as underpinnings to better understand and report explicit or underlying gender bias in Education. The main conclusions allude to the need of conceptualizing the classroom as an area that reproduces varied types of inequality that may also be gender-related. Teachers must be aware of these situations and be capable of transcending their role as mere knowledge transmitters and become educators, who also consider related sociohistorical contexts. In order to attain more inclusive education, teachers must systematize their experiences and carry out their own research so that they may be transformed into effective regional public policy.
