Abstract

CAMPOS-BUSTOS, Juana Lorena. Haitian Students in Chile: Approaches to Linguistic Integration in the Classroom. Educación [online]. 2019, vol.43, n.1, pp.433-450. ISSN 2215-2644.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/revedu.v43i1.30458.

The study reviews the linguistic integration process used by a public school in Chile to help immigrant students from Haiti who spoke Creole. The study, which is descriptive and analytical, is based on observation of how teachers integrated foreign students in this particular school. In-depth interviews and surveys were used in order to learn about the educational aspects and values associated with interculturality which must be regularly updated in the classroom. Given the collected data, linguistic assimilation strategies tend to be an intuitive effort of the teacher and mainly focus on attaining cultural acceptance of immigrant students as well as trusting that developing cordial relationships among the students on a daily basis will lead to successful linguistic and cultural assimilation of Haitian students in Chilean schools.
