Abstract

CANDRAY MENJIVAR, Jeser Caleb. Teaching work in El Salvador: salary, employment and the employability crisis of the Salvadoran teaching profession. Educación [online]. 2019, vol.43, n.1, pp.271-292. ISSN 2215-2644.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/revedu.v43i1.28913.

This article provides an overview of the working conditions of teachers especially in the public sector in the Republic of El Salvador. As initial considerations, a historical journey of the profession is made, passing through the three main stages that characterize its initial formation: empiricism, normalization and the transition to universities. Then, it is presented the legal framework in which the teacher is today. The characteristics that teachers have in the public sector, their initial training, specialties, salary structure, employment and the crisis of employability are described. Finally, the changes in the salaries of teachers in the period 2011-2018 are analyzed. For this reason, it is taken as reference the minimum wage and the cost of the basic food basket. The data found demonstrate a stability with a small upward trend in teacher salaries compared to the chosen parameters. It can also verify a sharpening of the job opportunities of teachers that affects school education. It is expected that with this article the pertinent actions will be taken for the creation of a comprehensive policy of admission to teaching with a focus on the professional development of teachers.
