Drawing encourages thinking and develops morphology skills in areas such as Histology. To that end, a correlational and descriptive study was carried out to identify a possible relationship between the academic grade students received for their drawings as part of their Medical School Histology practice sessions and final grades received in Cell Biology and Medical Histology classes. The sample group included 155 first-year students (4 class groups) from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) Medical School (2011-2012). Practice sessions included viewing histology slides through a microscope. A qualitative reference table for outline, sketch, color and histological depiction was prepared to quantitively assess the quality of the drawings. The final grade was used as an indicator of student performance. Descriptive statistics were used and the Spearman correlation coefficient and the ETA correlation calculated. The most prevalent grades were 2 and 3 for drawing (graded on a scale from 1-4 where 4 is the highest score) and 7.5 and 8 for final course grades. An AnoVa analysis showed significant differences in the groups studied (p <0.05). The Spearman correlation showed a positive relationship between the drawing score and the final grade. The ETA correlation coefficient was 0.71 in degree of association for the drawing’s grade with the final grade. Rendering good histology drawings improves skills development in medical students which is reflected in their final grade.
