Abstract

SOUSA, Sostenes Gomes de. Temporal analysis of the behavior of pluviometric precipitation in the Metropolitan Region of Cariri (Ce), Brazil. Rev. Geog. Amer. Central [online]. 2019, n.63, pp.273-294. ISSN 2215-2563.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15359/rgac.63-2.12.

The Brazilian semi-arid region comprises 1,133 municipalities, occupying an area of 982,563.3 km² and a population of approximately 47 million inhabitants. Water scarcity in the Brazilian semi-arid region and especially in the northeast region is a problem that people living in these areas face year after year. This region is characterized by almost eight months of rainfall occurring annually, periodic droughts and frequent floods of intermittent rivers, sandy, shallow, saline soils and poor in nutrients essential to the development of plants. Rain is still the only source of feedback from the rivers and aquifers of the Northeast. The study of rainfall series is fundamental for the management of water resources, development of projects to coexist with the semi-arid region and better for the development of agriculture and livestock, as well as to encourage the region's water sustainability. The objective of this study was to analyze the precipitation behavior during the last 31 years (1987 - 2017) in the Metropolitan Region of Cariri (CE), Brazil, in order to identify the characteristics of the regional rainfall regime. Data were collected together with the Cearense Foundation of Meteorology and Water Resources (FUNCEME), monthly pluviometric data of a series history of the municipality. We performed parameter calculations, such as: mean, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation. In this way, it was possible to verify that the municipalities that presented the highest pluviometric indices are Caririaçu that in 2008 reached 1632.0 mm and Santana do Cariri with 1612.1 mm in 1996. It is worth mentioning that between 2016 and 2017 in the majority of the MRC munitions the annual rainfall was well below the average for the series adopted.
