Abstract

SEGUN ALONSO, Manuel. Rafael Gerona Martínez: “everyone’s father”. Asylum in Madrid under Peru’s flag. REHMLAC [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.1-2, pp.206-227. ISSN 1659-4223.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/rehmlac.v12i1-2.41000.

A freemason from Madrid, Rafael Gerona Martínez used his membership in Freemasonry and his political contacts to save a multitude of people considered hidden fascists when the Republican government had lost control of the streets of Madrid. Together with the Peruvian Antonio Ibáñez Gutiérrez he installed under that flag, an asylum in which some five hundred people of the right received refuge and, thanks to that, none of them lost their lives. In this paper we intend to rescue Rafael Gerona from oblivion since he risked his life in a gesture of fraternity and altruism that was never recognized.

Keywords : Madrid Freemasonry; Peru; Republicanism; Francoism; Repression.
