Thespecter of FreemasonryhauntedtheSpanishEmpiresincethe mid-18thcentury. Althoughthiskind of sociabilitywasnotefficientlyimplementeduntilNapoleon’sinvasion, anti-masonicpublicationsmadeanearlyappearance in theIberianPeninsula and fromthereintoitscolonies. Afterwards, withthearrival of therevolution, thespecter of Freemasonrywasused as anexplanationforthepoliticalchange and as one of the axis of reactionarydiscoursesagainstliberalism. Thus, ourobjectiveistoanalyzethecirculation of anti-masonicwritings in theEuropean era of theEnlightment, specificallythehispanicproduction and itsmutationduringtherevolutionaryperiod. In orderto do so wehavestudiedtheworks of authorssuch as José Torrubia and Lorenzo Hervas y Panduro, as well as thevastpressproductionbelongingtotheperiodbetween 1810 and 1830 onbothsides of theAtlantic.
