Abstract

CARVAJAL ARAYA, María Isabel. “Los primeros escudos de Costa Rica: ¿fundamentos masónicos?”. REHMLAC [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.2, pp.47-74. ISSN 1659-4223.

This article will explore the use of four coats of arms from Costa Rica, three from 1824 and one from 1840. Through the study of symbolic elements within the coats of arms, it is possible to visualize how Euro-centric ideology permeates and influences social imagination, thus keeping colonial elements present in the citizen's view of the world. This study will also include a broad perspective on social and historical context, as well as in its symbology, particularly in the masonic elements present on patriotic symbols.

Keywords : Coats of arms; Freemasonry; Ideology; Iconography; Iconology; Symbolism; Coloniality.
