Abstract

URBINA GAITAN, Chester. “Patriotismo, prensa e intelectuales en Costa Rica (1846-1849)” . REHMLAC [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.2, pp.33-46. ISSN 1659-4223.

The concept of patriotism used by Dr. José María Castro Madriz in the newspaper El Costarricense between 1846-1849 was based upon a love of country and a strong sense of identity with their government. Moreover, the concept of patriotism issued by don Nicolas Gallegos in 1849 is anthropological in nature and refers to an assessment of the positive effect of love and sacrifice to the country. These texts are important because they began to build a platform to call for the defense of national sovereignty, the defense of the State and of peace and political stability, a decade before the Campaña Nacional.

Keywords : Costa Rica; State; Patriotism; Intellectuals; Press; National Identity.
