Abstract

SEQUEIRA ROVIRA, Paula. Ideología de género en las redes sociales. Análisis de memes para entender el fenómeno. Comunicación [online]. 2023, vol.32, n.1, pp.5-22. ISSN 1659-3820.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18845/rc.v32i44.6787.

This article suggests an analysis of the metaphors that emerge from seven memes posted on the Facebook page of a Costa Rican conservative social network, where the struggle against gender ideology becomes the binding factor. From these contents, it is possible to identify some of the recurrent fears of such segments towards groups that they label as progressive, feminist, or leftist. Many of these concerns are based on the apparent threat of the elimination of human nature, the destruction of the traditional family, the danger of annulling the boundaries between men and women, the risk of causing mental confusion in minors, and the nostalgia for a past where Christian morality prevailed. The memes under analysis suggest unpleasant emotions towards a society in which they feel marginalized and where it is difficult to provide further spaces for dialogue. Since conservative groups frequently use social networks to publish their worldviews, the study of memes becomes relevant to show some of the discourses offered through this tool.

Keywords : Internet; conservatism; feminism; social network; discourse; identity; meme.
