Individual factors involving university professors that motivate their engagement with non-academic organizations

This article studies collaboration between higher education and non-academic organizations. More specifically, it focuses on the university professor, with the objective of determining individual factors that motivate their collaboration with companies, public institutions, international organizations, and non-profit organizations, among others.

Research stemmed from a literature review that outlines a theoretical model of five factors or motivators that impact a professor’s decision when carrying out collaborative activities. Four of these factors are positive stimuli in promoting higher involvement: three are incentives: monetary or personal gain, recognition -both by society and the scientific community-, and a sense of accomplishment for contributing to the solution of problems. The fourth factor that impacts a professor positively is previous experience in collaboration processes.

The fifth factor is the cost of cooperation, measured as the perception of time dedicated to collaboration activities that is detrimental to other teaching duties, such as preparing and giving lessons or performing administrative tasks. Cost is presented as a hindrance to collaboration between the university and the organizations in its setting.

Identifying the factors associated with the professor can help universities to propose mechanisms and strategies that encourage greater academic participation in collaboration activities, motivated by their work with society.
