Abstract

Objective:

To know the relationship between periodontal disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the control of blood glucose.

Design and research methods:

A bibliographic search was conducted using a database (PubMed) with english language restriction, looking for the most recent research and with the largest number of research subjects.

Results:

The articles reviewed coincide in the treatment of periodontal disease improves glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2, with an average of 0.69% in the level of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c).

Conclusions:

Periodontal treatment improves glycemic control in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, as well as the number of inflammatory cells (such as IL6 and TNF-α) that cause alterations in insulin activity.
