Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to analyze experiences of educational researchers, using ethnography, which was carried out in the "Instituto de Investigación para el Mejoramiento de la Educación Costarricense, (IIMEC), nowadays "Instituto de Investigación en Educación", (INIE), during the eighties and nineties. Throughout this period of time, three ethnographic research projects were accomplished on verbal interaction, classroom management, institutional change. The foundation of these studies: construction of educational daily life, its interpretation with the participation of the observed, and actions taken, based on the data, invited the researcher, author of this essay to answer the question: ¿Why is it important that the teacher do research? It outlines how, qualitative research contributes to teaching and social extension, and it underlines the need that the real educative context can be experienced,analized, and understood in its environment.
