Abstract

MERINO PANTOJA, Edgardo; MORONG REYES, Germán; ARELLANO ARAYA, Ana Olga  and  MERINO VIDANGOSSY, Edgar. Features, Motivation and Expectations of Gender Male Students Career College Teaching from Universidad Bernardo O'Higgins. Rev. Actual. Investig. Educ [online]. 2015, vol.15, n.3, pp.182-205. ISSN 1409-4703.

This article presents the results of an investigation conducted in 2014, at the Faculty of Education at University Bernardo O'Higgins. This research aimed at describing the characteristics, motivation and expectations that prompted a group of young (male) students to choose teaching programs. The methodology used corresponds to a descriptive quantitative type, considering a questionnaire that, after its validation and piloting, was applied to 42 students. (Alfa Crombrach 0.83). The results of processing showed that most of the students had recently graduated from high school, displaying school´s achievements which vary within the national mean range. In connection with the perspective that they have about the education system, the results determine that state-subsidized education is given a low degree of appreciation by the participants. They question their school´s teaching work and have serious reservations regarding the preparation of teaching and the relevance of contents in secondary education; they also consider that society does not value the work of teachers. In motivational terms, intrinsic motivation prevails over extrinsic elements. This situation leads this research to state that those students who chose the teaching programs made their decision on the basis of their own interests concerning education and that despite the controversial times that the teaching profession is facing in Chile, their vocation for teaching still prevailed.
