Nowadays, university directors must think and question how to approach this process and which are the advantages for an organization that has them. This is why the objective of this article is to analize the degree of progress of different inputs used in strategic planning and its relation to results of universities about accreditation, that will allow them to have a quality certification in internal processes and with this, differentiate from other higher education institutions. Bibliographic review of relevant concepts is used as a methodology as well as secondary data information obtained from all chilean universities that are part of The State Universities Consortium of Chile (CUECH). Later, criteria are defined in order to quantify the degree of progress in universities regarding inputs involved in the formulation of the strategic plan. Its relation with the results are analized and it is concluded that strategic plans of universities are formed of various inputs and the degree of progress regarding their formulation, doesn’t have impact in these.
