Abstract

ARCELAY ROJAS, Yitza A.  and  AVILES GARAY, Edgardo J.. Pre-Service Teachers’ Knowledge and Experiences Regarding the Application of Practices that Promotes Educational Resiliency. Rev. Actual. Investig. Educ [online]. 2014, vol.14, n.3, pp.298-332. ISSN 1409-4703.

The purpose of this article was to explore the knowledge and experiences of students enrolled in a teacher preparation program at a private university in Puerto Rico, on their ability to implement strategies in the classroom that contribute to the development of educational resilience. The theoretical framework was the resilience wheel developed by Henderson and Milstein. Participants were selected from the population of pre-service students enrolled in the student teaching, both elementary and secondary levels, in a private university. The design was qualitative, hermeneutic and used focus group interviews. Four focus groups were conducted, two to explore the knowledge and experiences of participants in the elementary level and two at the secondary level. The most significant finding was the lack of knowledge of the resilience concept. Despite this lack of knowledge, most participants (70%) reported the implementation of practices that related to the promotion of educational resilience and emphasized the importance of establishing a supportive and caring teacher-student relationship. However, less than 50% of the teacher candidates expressed implementing the following practices that promote resilience: assertiveness skills, peer tutoring and extracurricular activities. Participants indicated the need for more preparation in resilience aspects, including how to promote educational resilience.

Keywords : Educational resilience; teacher preparation; teachers; private higher education; educational institution; Puerto Rico.
