Abstract

The invocation of the Virgen del Carmen is a tradition of European origin which spread in America at least since the seventeenth century. The title of Virgen del Mar has spread from Spain. Founded by Father José Daniel Carmona 1914 in the city of Puntarenas, festivities of the Virgen del Mar are held as a series of religious events that also involve the confluence of economic and political interests.
