Abstract

CARVAJAL CARVAJAL, Carlos. El laboratorio clínico en el diagnóstico de la enfermedad renal crónica. Med. leg. Costa Rica [online]. 2016, vol.33, n.1, pp.190-196. ISSN 2215-5287.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined as abnormalities of kidney structure or function for more than three months and it is usually detected using estimated GFR and/ or albuminuria. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is accepted as the best indicator of kidney function in clinical practice, and its measurement using urinary or plasma clearence of exogenous filtration markers is considered the gold standard.

In clinical practice, measuring GFR by these methods is impractical and expensive. Therefore creatinine clearence is usually assessed by differents equations: MDRD and CKD-EPI. GFR-estimating equation CKD-EPI creatininecystatin shows better performance than other equations using creatinine or cystatin alone.

Keywords : Chronic kidney disease; Creatinine; Cystatin C; Glomerular filtration rate.
