Abstract

ABARCA-GUERRERO, Lilliana. Construction waste generation causes score in Costa Rica. Tecnología en Marcha [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.4, pp.130-137. ISSN 0379-3982.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18845/tm.v30i4.3417.

In developing countries, construction waste is becoming a serious environmental problem due to the continuing growing population and urbanization, which demand material resources, water and energy. Information and data about the sector in those economies is scarce and some of the information found can’t be compared with other data.

An assessment has been done in Costa Rica, which showed that the availability of data at the construction company level on material waste was scarce, inexistent or had discrepancies. The most important waste categories reported are wood, concrete and metals. The findings revealed that the waste sources are:design, material procurement, material handling, operations, residual related and other. The objective of this research was to analyse the level of importance of the main sources of construction waste in Costa Rica. Small, medium and large companies were investigated and the causes of construction waste generation were scored. The outcome of the research is a comprehensive list of waste generation causes and their level of importance.

Keywords : Construction waste; Causes of waste; scoring.
