Abstract

AGUILAR-ULLOA, Wendy; ARCE-ACUNA, Priscilla  and  RIVERA-MENDEZ, William. Isolation and identification of causal agent of white rot in Allium cepa, in Llano Grande Cartago, Costa Rica. Tecnología en Marcha [online]. 2016, vol.29, suppl.3, pp.51-56. ISSN 0379-3982.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18845/tm.v29i7.2705.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is a very important crop in Costa Rica in national consume but also international. With this crop, it has been estimated economic loses because of diseases produced by different pathogens like the white rot, which generate illness directly in the bulb and it represents a great threat for the agriculture, because it can stay 20 years in the ground. Therefore, the general objective of this research was to develop a microscopic and molecular diagnosis of the pathogen that causes the white rot in the onion cultivated in Varillal de Llano Grande in Cartago, from sclerotic isolation and culture. The followed methodology allowed us to isolate and identify the causal agent of this illness, the one in a microscopic manner it was similar to Stromatinia cepivorum, however it was able to identify as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum by molecular analysis.

Keywords : Sclerotinia sclerotiorum; white rot; onion.
