Abstract

VILLEGAS DE OLAZAVAL, Hugo. Internet y salud. Acta méd. costarric [online]. 2000, vol.42, n.1, pp.14-16. ISSN 0001-6002.

The web and the telecommunication networks have an ever increasing use in informatics, human resources development, and continuing medical education. In the following article the available resources that can be used to strengthen the information search, distribution of basic documents, clinical guidelines and procedures, usage of e-mail, participation in discussion groups, teleconferencing, telemedicine, and how to make an analysis and investigation are described. Virtual libraries, which allow an effective interaction, and the continuing educational processes, constitute fundamental elements in keeping up to date with current knowledge for the population’s benefit. At the same time, systems which include health information, computerized individual registries, administrative practice for health services and institutions, disease epidemiological surveillance, health risks, and disasters, are components of the continuing awareness of public health policies. The challenge for quality control and the efficiency of the delivery of computerized services to the population are the axis of the future. The web constitutes a basic element in the process for general development.
