Abstract

MARROQUIN-JOACHIN, Johanna. The crypt of the Cathedral of San Salvador. Espiga [online]. 2024, vol.23, n.48, pp.79-112. ISSN 2215-454X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22458/re.v23i48.5511.

The crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador is a place of memory where significant events that marked the history of El Salvador in the 1980s took place. The crypt houses the remains of Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez, known as Monsignor Romero, and over time it has become a space for reflection. This article aims to describe this place of memory, both the material and immaterial elements that compose it, using the methodology of participant observation. The main finding of the study emerged from the testimonies of participants in the liturgies and the men and women who make up the community, who argued that the role of the crypt for Salvadorans is to serve as a window for denunciations, memories, and contradictions.

Keywords : memory site; denunciations; history; values.
