Abstract

MIRANDA-GUTIERREZ, Noelia. Women in Music: Performance of Compositions by Female Composers in the Costa Rican Academic Music Scene. Espiga [online]. 2024, vol.23, n.48, pp.50-78. ISSN 2215-454X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22458/re.v23i48.5473.

This article is the result of an exploratory investigation into the performance of repertoire by academic composers in Costa Rica from the late 19th century to the present. The aim of this research is to contribute to the historical recognition of female academic composers in response to the ongoing marginalization of this repertoire in the country. The study focuses spatially on concert halls located in the Central Valley, as this is where the main concentration of academic musical performances in Costa Rica has been recorded over the centuries. The article includes a literature review, six interviews with professional women in music, who shared their experiences with academic repertoire composed by women. Additionally, direct consultations were made in historical archives to identify the presence or absence of this repertoire in the country. All these sources enable the creation of an initial record of musical works and academic composers who have performed in Costa Rican concert halls from the pioneers of the late 19th century to contemporary composers. This record demonstrates how, despite the patriarchal restrictions that have characterized composition and the musical canon, women have been present with their works in all the centuries explored in the article.
