Importance of the transportation system in risk management: lessons learned from Hurricane Otis in Acapulco, Guerrero. Rev. Geog. Amer. Central [online]. 2026, n.77, pp.127-156. Epub 18-Mayo-2026. This paper discusses the importance of the transportation system in risk management, based on the case of the city of Acapulco in the context of the disaster triggered by Hurricane Otis in October 2023.The methodology was based on the development of thematic maps to analyze the transportation system. The main result was that risk management requires an efficient and sufficient transportation system to allow for the transfer of people to shelters and evacuations, as well as access to outside help to deal with the emergency. In the case of Acapulco, its inadequate transportation system made emergency preparation and response difficult: there were no adequate conditions for evacuation or movement to shelters, and outside assistance was not provided in a timely manner due to deficiencies and damage to the transportation system.
