MARTINEZ-AGUILAR, Esmeralda y HERNANDEZ-GUERRERO, Juan. Urban impact on the waterscape of the Santa Rosa Jáuregui subwatershed, Querétaro, Mexico. Rev. Geog. Amer. Central [online]. 2026, n.77, pp.15-45. Epub 10-Mar-2026. ISSN 2215-2563. http://dx.doi.org/10.15359/rgac.77-2.1.
The waterscape in periurban watersheds is commonly affected by the degree of urbanization of the regions that support water flow. The present work analyzed the urban impact on the waterscape of the Santa Rosa Jáuregui subwatershed in Querétaro, Mexico. The process consisted of the representation and description of urbanization, water and hydraulic resources, functional zones, and land use and vegetation between 1990 and 2024, including social relationships that intervene in the changes of the waterscape. Thus, the urbanization of water transport and storage areas was evidenced by real estate actions and the proliferation of wells for water extraction. We conclude with the need to protect the upper zone of the sub-basin (water catchment). These findings provide information to be considered in urban and territorial plans and programs.
