Abstract

PALACIOS MURILLO, Fabiola. Notes on the History and Development of Hip Hop in Costa Rica. Rev. Rup. [online]. 2021, vol.11, n.2, pp.131-146. ISSN 2215-2989.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22458/rr.v11i2.3646.

This article aims to analyze and discuss the historical conditions that marked the beginning of hip hop in Costa Rica, as well as some events that have particularized the formation of a Costa Rican hip hop scene. The historical reconstruction was carried out through interviews with people who were part of this movement in its beginnings. This same research tool was used to characterize the hip hop scene today. The article explores some of the complexities that have characterized the development of hip hop in the country, which has been marked by collectivization, self-management, competition, the search for authenticity and unequal participation with respect to gender.

Keywords : Hip hop; culture; history; identity; urban music.
