Abstract

ALVAREZ, David Castañeda  and  LIRA, Salvador. A Hermeneutic-iconological Approach to the Study of Works with Masonic Symbology: The Case of Alegoría de la República Mexicana by Primitivo Miranda (1850). REHMLAC [online]. 2025, vol.17, n.1, pp.49-80. ISSN 1659-4223.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/rehmlac.v17i1.62095.

This work seeks to explain processes of symbolic and emblematic integration of freemasonry, based on a hermeneutic-iconological reading, to indicate its origins in the emblematic Hermetic tradition of the Modern Age. To do this, the specific case of the Allegory of the Mexican Republic (1850) by Primitivo Miranda, will be examined to explain how multiple integrations of symbols and emblems in masonic objects provide a sense of national and group identity.
