Abstract

SEVILLA RENAZCO, Jardiel Steven; ALEMAN LAINEZ, Kelly Mishel; PEREZ LACAYO, Chelssy del Socorro  and  DELGADO MENDEZ, Marco Antonio. Solubility of two glass ionomers submerged in artificial saliva for 21 days. Odontología Vital [online]. 2024, n.41, pp.43-54. ISSN 1659-0775.  http://dx.doi.org/10.59334/rov.v2i41.592.

Introduction:

In general, the glass ionomer suffers effects in the clinical area, such as its solubility in the saliva itself found in the oral cavity.

This solubility influences the loss of marginal integration, surface properties and aesthetics, which implies a failure of the restorative treatment.

Objective:

The purpose of this research was to compare the solubility of two glass ionomers, one conventional (3M ESPE Ketac Molar Easymix®) and another modified with resin (GC Gold Label 2), immersed in artificial saliva for a period of 21 days.

Method:

An in vitro experimental study was conducted, where fifteen tablets of conventional 3M ESPE Ketac Molar Easymix® glass ionomer and fifteen of modified glass ionomer with GC Gold Label 2 resin were prepared. This was divided into three tablets of each ionomer, with which resulted in five groups of three tablets per ionomer. In addition, a calibration was conducted so as not to affect the exclusive weight of the group of three pills, and then a weight measurement was conducted with an analytical balance for each group of pills. After that, each group of three pills was immersed in artificial saliva from the KIN Hidrat brand for 21 days to return after careful drying, evaluating the weight loss of each group by immersion in artificial saliva in percentage.

Results:

Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel. A database was created, and the Shapiro-Wilk normality test was applied, which showed that both groups had a normal distribution and homogeneous samples. The percentage of weight difference due to submersion in artificial saliva had an average of 3.18% for Ketac Molar Easymix ® and 4.012% for GC Gold Label 2. The student t test for independent samples was also applied to compare the difference groups. weight in percentage.

Although the level of significance is 0.55, indicating that there is no statistically significant difference in the group means of the two types of ionomers, it is highlighted that, from a clinical and practical perspective, each sample represents that three ionomer tablets of glass of this brand and bottle have gained weight significantly. This suggests that there may be clinical relevance to the application of ionomers.

Conclusion:

The in vitro study concludes that the GC Gold Label 2 glass ionomer is the one that obtains the highest solubility, represented as a percentage, after 21 days of immersion in artificial saliva. The study found that both glass ionomers show significant weight gain after submersion in artificial saliva. Furthermore, although the statistical analysis does not show a significant difference between the two groups, the results may have important practical implications in the application of these materials in clinical use.
