LASSO DIAZ, Edgardo; PAVA GARZON, Diana Marcela e FLORES RUEDA, Ariel. Pulmonary thromboembolism as a possible adverse reaction to Quetiapine Case report. Med. leg. Costa Rica [online]. 2022, vol.39, n.2, pp.32-36. ISSN 2215-5287.
Some studies suggest a relationship between antipsychotic use and the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and pulmonary embolism (PE). However, the results remain inconclusive. This is the case of a 23-year-old male with a history of schizophrenia and depression treated with quetiapine 800 mg, who was found dead in a hotel bed. At necropsy with no visible traumatic lesions, histological findings of massive pulmonary thromboembolism with secondary pulmonary infarcts. Toxicology laboratory detected the presence of quetiapine, no alcohol or drugs of abuse were detected. Using the Modified Karch & Lasagna Algorithm, pulmonary thromboembolism was an adverse reaction with a probable causal relationship.
Many cases of sudden death caused by PE have been reported with exposure to antipsychotics, but the relationship of their use and the risk of VTE and PE remains controversial.
