At the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, volcanology in Costa Rica was not favored institutionally and its development fell to a group of scientists of the time who, with little time and resources, took on the task of exploring and describing volcanoes and their activity, as well as other reliefs, rocks and igneous processes. This knowledge was reflected in a plethora of scientific, cultural and educational journals, including newspapers of the time, which gradually permeated the society, changing its perception of volcanism and other related processes. The main protagonists, in order of appearance were Henri Pittier, José Fidel Tristán, Paul Schaufelberger and César Dóndoli. They were the pillars on which research on volcanism and seismicity in Costa Rica was based from the end of the 19th century and 1959, until the institutionalization of geology, volcanology and seismology was consolidated between 1960 and 1989. This was driven by the creation of public universities and other institutions where geological research was required. It also favored the emergence of a new generation of specialized scientific journals such as the Revista Geológica de América Central, from which the dissemination of modern volcanological knowledge began. This work was motivated by the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Revista Geológica de América Central, not only as a tribute to the journal and to those who created it, but also to its historical roots and to those who contributed, at different times, to the development of volcanology, seismology and geology in Costa Rica.
