Aim: Glycated hemoglobin has been used as one of the main tools to achieve a successful control of diabetes mellitus. This study’s aim is to describe glycated hemoglobin values from diabetic patients followed at the National Children’s Hospital, who were diagnosed during the 2006 - 2008 period. Methods:Observational descriptive study of 115 diabetic patients in control at the National Children’s Hospital, diagnosed during the 2006 - 2008. Average glycated hemoglobin values at the time of diagnosis and in subsequent control were established. Percentage of success in glycated hemoglobin goals, as defined by the American Diabetes Association, was also obtained. Microsoft Excel 2003 was used for data processing. Results: Of the 115 patients, 79.13% are type1 diabetics, 16,52% type 2, and 4.35% other types. Average glycated hemoglobin values was 7.05% from 0-6 years, 6.87% from 6-12 years, and 7.04% over 12 years. Average values correspond to 7.03% for type1, 7.04% for type2, and 6.45% others. The percentage of success in glycated hemoglobin goals are 90,00% from 0-6 years, 90.47% from 6-12 years, and 66.66% over 12 years. The general success percentage is 85.71%. Conclusions: Type1 diabetes continues to be the most frequent diagnosis, nevertheless type 2 diabetics are increasing in the Costarrican pediatric population. The diabetic patients that receive their control at the National Children’s Hospital present glycated hemoglobin average values that comply with the ADA’s proposed success goals.
