Norms of publication

Acta Médica Costarricense (amc) it is the official scientific publication of the Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos de Costa Rica. The magazine publishes original works, articles of revision, fast comunications, reports of cases, publishing letters to the publisher as well as related to any subject of the medicine and the biociencias. The manuscripts that are put under the Publishing Committee for publication in Medical Act must original and be prepared in agreement with Requisitos Uniformes for Manuscripts Submissive Biomedical Magazines. developed by the Committee  the International of Publishers of Medical Magazines (N Engl J Med 1991;  324:424-8). 

In order to obtain additional data it is recommended to consult amc 1998; 40(3):53-60. Manuscripts prepared in inadequate form will be returned to  the author without being reviewed. The articles accepted for publication in amc will happen to be property of the Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos and must not partially be published total or in any other magazine, although he is in another language (except in summary form).
 

Instructions to the authors
The manuscripts must be put under in quadruplicated, original and 3 complete copies (including all the figures). The work will have to appear on paper printed to double-spaced bond so large letter, a single side of the leaf and with all the leaves numbered in consecutive form (including figures and tables). A maximum of 15 leaves is recommended, but works of greater length will be considered in special cases. The authors will have to along with fill and to give to the manuscript lista of revision of authors. and the transference of rights and liberation of responsibilities. All the copies of the manuscript will have to be given in the office of the Publishing Committee amc in the building of the Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos  or shipments to Apdo. 548-1000, San Jose, Costa Rica. 

The manuscript will be ordered of the following way: title page, summarizes,  text, 
gratefulness and collaborator, references, pictures, legend of the figures and figures. Page of title: it includes Title: it must be concise but informative, be limited 125 characters and without abbreviations. In case of animal studies it must mention the species. 

Authors: he includes first full name of all the authors and their institutional affiliation (the authors must limit themselves whom contributed substantially in the design of the study, the analysis of information or writing of the manuscript). 

Name of department (s) and institution (it is) to which is due to attribute the work.

Descriptors:  to write of 3 to 10 key words. 

Abbreviations: list in alphabetical order of all the used abbreviations in the text (in general the use of abbreviations is not recommended). 

Short title: limit of 45 characters. 

Correspondence: name and mailing dress, telephone number and of facsimile of the author to whom all correspondence is due to direct. 

Summary: nongreater of 250 words, in English Spanish and, structured using the  following subtitles: justification and objective, methods, results and conclusion. Abbreviations, references or notes on footer do not have to be used. 

Body of the work: Introduction: express the intention of the article. Locate the  subject within the present knowledge and raise his objective in clear form and need. 

Materials (subject) and method: describe with clarity the method of selection of  subjects, instruments and procedures used with sufficient detail like so that he is reproducible by the reader. Manuscripts reporting data obtained in human beings must include a note in the section of methods that assures that consent informed into each patient was obtained in writing and who the protocol of the study fulfilled the requirements of the committee of ethics of the corresponding center. The manuscripts that report experiments using animals must include a note where it makes sure that they were fulfilled the general recommendations  for the taken care of handling and of experimentation animals. 

Identify used medicines and chemistries accurately, including generic name, dose and via of administration. Describe clearly the used statistical analyses. Use approved conventional units of measurement (UI or SI).

Results: present the results in logical sequence in the text, tables and illustrations. It does not repeat in the text data presented/displayed in tables or illustrations. It does not comment any result in this section. 

Discussion: Information given in some other section does not repeat (introduction, results or materials); mention the new and important aspects contributed by the study and the conclusions that can be obtained from the results. Relate to other reports in Literature. Indicate the limitations of the  study and include the repercussions on other present or future investigations and propose new hypotheses. Avoid to draw to conclusions from studies nonfinalized or conclusions nonbased on the obtained results.

Gratefulness and Collaborator: all the economic support or of another nature
received for the accomplishment of the investigation is due to enumerate here. 

Reference: they must follow the recommended system for biomedical magazines (to see second paragraph). They must go numbered in consecutive form following the order in which they are mentioned for the first time in the text. The title of the magazines must follow the abbreviation mentioned in the Index Medicus. At the most list 6 authors, of being more after sixth uses Et al. All the articles in the list of references must be mentioned in the text and all reference mentioned in the text must appear in the list. Not to use appointments of personal communications or material nonpublished (they are possible to be written down     within the text in parenthesis). The revision articles must include 35 bibliographical appointments at least and original at least the 15. Example: 

Article: Apéstegui A, Deliyore J. Digoxinemia. Acta Med Costarric 1996; 38(1): 1-4.

Book: Hernández R. Fernández C, Baptista P. Metodología de la investigación. México: MacGraw-Hill, 1991.

Article in the book: Piel G ¿Qué es un artículo científico? En: Day Ra, ed. Como escribir y publicar trabajos científicos. Washington: oms, 1990: 8-14.

Pictures: they must be autoexplicativos, consecutively numbered in the text with Arabic numbers and each one presented/displayed in individual form in a separate leaf with the number of the table and the title trims on the table and any explanatory note in the inferior part of the same one, everything to double-spaced. 

Legend of the figures: they must appear aside printed to double-spaced in a leaf. They must be numbered according to the order in which they are mentioned in the text. They are due to offer sufficient information to allow the interpretation of the figures with no need to talk about to the text. 

Figures: 4 complete groups of figures are due to give to the work along with. All illustration must come noticeable in reverso with the corresponding number, the direction (above) and the name of the author. The illustrations must be numbered with Arabic numbers in  consecutive form in agreement with his first mention in the text. It is recommended that the graphs and other figures generated in computer are printed in a laser printer of high quality 

Fast Communications: when manuscripts for fast publication are put under, the authors must include a letter where they justify porqué consider that its article must be published quickly. Single concise, original works in their definitive version, of great scientific importance will be considered for this section. These manuscripts also will have to be put under in original and three copies, will not have to exceed 3000 words and they will not include more than 2 tables and 2 figures. 

Report of Cases: single the description of one or more clinical cases of exceptional observation will be accepted that suppose an important contribution in the knowledge of the fisiopatología or other aspects of the process and that offers to material and information of importance for future investigation. The Maxima extension of the text will have to be of 5 pages of 30 lines and a maximum of 3 figures or tables will be admitted. 

Letters to the Publisher: concerning letters mainly with articles published in Costa Rican Medical Act will be considered for publication. The letters to the publisher will have to promote scientific discussion in medical subjects. These will have to go to the publishing committee indicating that they are for considering itself like correspondence and not like original article. They can contain 1 figure or table and they will not have to contain more than 500 words, to include more than 10 references, nor to be signed by more than three authors. The publishers reserve the right to publish letters with the purpose of being brief      or classifying their content.

Final version: the works accepted for publication will have to appear in their final in diskette 3,5, DOS 5,0 or superior version.

Allocation of Rights, Responsibility of Participation, Declaration of Financing, Approval by Scientific Committee / Committee of Protection Local Animal. 

Allocation of Rights: in consideration to the revision and edition of the manuscript              presented/displayed on the part of the Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos de Costa Rica, the down signatory authors, in joint and unanimous form, we transferred and we assigned all surrounded right, title or interest, including nobody and all right of author in any type of form and means to the Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos de Costa Rica. Of not publishing itself in work in AMC, these rights they will be released. 

Responsibility of Participation: I, the author, down signatory, point out that I have participated sufficiently in the intellectual content, the information analysis, if she is applied, and the writing of the manuscript, to take public responsibility by him. I have reviewed the final version of the manuscript and consider that she represents valid work and approve his publication. Like author of this article, I point out that nothing of the material in him including has been published previously, is including in another manuscript or is at the moment being considered for publication in another place. Also I point out that this article has not been accepted for publication in some other place and that I have not assigned to no right or interest to any third person. If the AMC publishers require the original information on that this manuscript is based, I will give it for revision.

Declaration of financing: I, the down signatory author, point out that I do not have commercial associations that can mean a conflict of interest with the article submissive valuation, except as I aside specify it in note. All institutional and corporative source of financing and affiliations have been indicated in the corresponding section of the manuscript. 

Approval by the Scientific Committee / Committee of Protection Local Animal: I, the down signatory author, point out that my institution approved the protocol of investigation for any investigation that involves human beings or animals and that all experimentation was conducted in accordance with the ethical and human principles of investigation.
