Una de las causas del daño por humedad es la mala afinidad química de la interfaz asfalto-agregado formada cuando el primero recubre al segundo durante el proceso de mezcla. La debilidad de la interfaz puede deberse a una pobre interacción entre ambos materiales, lo que aumenta la predisposición del asfalto a ser desplazado por el agua. En este estudio, la calidad de la interfaz asfalto-agregado fue aproximada mediante la medición de la Energía Superficial de los materiales involucrados. Se tomaron como muestra dos tipos de agregado, una Caliza y una Grava de río (silícea), los cuales fueron combinados con tres asfaltos: un asfalto modificado con diatomita, un asfalto modificado con nanosílica y un asfalto control. Las combinaciones propuestas fueron evaluadas mediante indicadores fisicoquímicos relacionados con el daño por humedad como el trabajo de adhesión, el trabajo de desplazamiento y la Razón de Energía. Se encontró que la calidad de la interfaz formada depende del tipo de agregado empleado. Además, se pudo evaluar si los aditivos resultan convenientes en la reducción de la susceptibilidad a la humedad, lo cual es dependiente del tipo de agregado con el que se combinen. En general, a partir de la estimación de la Energía Superficial del asfalto y agregado pueden obtenerse indicadores relevantes en cuanto a la formación de interfaces. De esta forma, es posible la evaluación fisicoquímica de asfaltos y agregados para la selección de materiales y combinaciones resistentes ante el daño por humedad.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Moisture damage is one of the most severe distresses in pavements. Among the causes of moisture damage is the poor quality of the binderaggregate interface formed during mixing. The weakness of the interface might be due to a poor interaction between materials, which increases the susceptibility of binder of being removed from the aggregate surface by water. In this study, the quality of the binder-aggregate interface was approached by means of surface energy measurements of several binder-aggregate combinations. Two different aggregate sources were investigated: a limestone and a gravel, which were combined with three asphalt binders: a diatoms-modified binder, a nanosilica-modified binder and neat binder as control. The proposed combinations were evaluated by means of physicochemical indicators related to moisture damage, such as work of adhesion, work of debonding and energy ratio. It was found that the quality of the interface is highly related to the aggregate source. Furthermore, several anti-strip additives were evaluated in terms of reduction of water susceptibility of the combinations and it was observed that their efficiency is dependent on the aggregate source with which the modified binder is combined. In summary, various parameters associated to interfaces can be obtained from surface energy measurements of binders and aggregates. This technique allows the physicochemical evaluation of binders and aggregates and the information obtained might be used as criteria for appropriate selection of water-resistant materials.]]></p></abstract>
