La marchitez por Fusarium causada por el hongo Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, raza tropical 4, es considerada como la enfermedad más letal de las musáceas, debido que puede sobrevivir en el suelo por más de veinte años, sin control efectivo. Objetivo. Reseñar el estado actual y rasgos significativos de esta enfermedad, e indicar riesgo de impacto potencial en países de América Latina y el Caribe ante su reciente reporte en Colombia. Desarrollo. Posee varias razas: la raza 1 ataca clones de los subgrupos Silk (Musa AAB) y Gros Michel (Musa AAA) y fue responsable de la pérdida del mercado bananero mundial en 1958, dominado por este último, fue sustituido por clones Cavendish (Musa AAA). La raza 2, ataca clones del subgrupo Bluggoe (Musa ABB); y la raza 4, a través de sus variantes tropical y subtropical, a todos los clones Cavendish, y los susceptibles a la raza 1 y raza 2. No existen clones naturales que puedan sustituir los actuales. La raza tropical 4 (R4T), se ha diseminado en diferentes continentes, causa pérdidas multimillonarias, con extrema limitaciones para su erradicación, y recientemente es motivo de preocupación en países de América Latina y el Caribe (LAC), debido a su reciente brote en la Guajira colombiana. Conclusión. El deficiente control, y desconocimiento de rasgos del patógeno y la enfermedad, hacen necesario el desarrollo de investigaciones para su diagnóstico temprano, estrategias de manejo, medidas de educación y/o promoción sobre planes de contingencias. Recientemente fue detectada en Colombia, lo cual implica alto riesgo para el resto de los países de la región LAC (con énfasis en Ecuador, Panamá y Venezuela), debido al flujo constante de personas (incluye turistas) y transacciones comerciales, siendo necesaria de manera imperativa una revisión de los análisis de riesgo ante este nuevo escenario.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Introduction. Fusarium wilt, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, tropical race 4, is considered the most lethal disease of the musaceae because it can survive on the ground for more than twenty years, without effective control. Objective. Review the current status and significant features of this disease and indicate the potential impact risk in Latin America and the Caribbean countries in the face of its recent report in Colombia. Developing. It has several races: race 1 attacks clones of the Silk (Musa AAB) and Gros Michel (Musa AAA) subgroups and was responsible for the loss of the world banana market in 1958, dominated by the latter, being replaced by Cavendish clones (Musa AAA). Race 2 attacks clones of the Bluggoe subgroup (Musa ABB); and race 4, through its tropical and subtropical variants, attacks all Cavendish clones, and those susceptible to race 1 and race 2. There are no natural clones that can replace the current ones. Tropical race 4 (R4T), has spread in different continents, causing multimillion dollar losses, with extreme limitations for its eradication, and recently is a cause for concern in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, due to its recent report in the Colombian Guajira. Conclusion. The deficient control, and ignorance of thr traits of the pathogen and the disease, make necessary the development of research for its early diagnosis, management strategies, education measures, and / or promotion of contingency plans. Recently it was detected in Colombia, which implies high risk for the rest of the countries of the LAC region (with emphasis on Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela), due to the constant flow of people (including tourists) and commercial transactions, being necessary in a way it is imperative to review the risk analysis in this new scenario.]]></p></abstract>
