La muerte descendente es una grave enfermedad reportada en las regiones productoras de mango en México; sin embargo, no existe información acerca de la percepción y el manejo que los productores tienen respecto a esta enfermedad. Objetivo. Conocer la percepción de los productores de mango del municipio de Actopan, Veracruz, México, sobre la muerte descendente y el tipo de manejo que implementan, así como describir sus aspectos socioeconómicos y productivos. Materiales y métodos. La investigación se realizó en el municipio de Actopan, Veracruz, México, en los años 2021-2022. Se aplicaron entrevistas semiestructuradas con 45 preguntas a productores de mango. Se abordaron la caracterización socioeconómica de los productores, el manejo de la parcela, las enfermedades recurrentes y la percepción y el manejo de la muerte descendente. Los datos obtenidos se analizaron mediante diversas herramientas estadísticas multivariadas y descriptivas. Resultados. La mayoría de los productores eran hombres (94 %) con un amplio rango de edad, entre los que predominaban los adultos mayores y adultos jóvenes. El análisis de conglomerados permitió identificar tres grupos de productores: pequeños (56 %), medianos (16 %) y grandes (28 %), cada uno con características específicas en cuanto a superficie de cultivo, manejo agronómico y rendimiento (M = 8,54 ± 3,75 t/ha). La muerte descendente fue reconocida por todos los entrevistados; los principales síntomas asociados a la enfermedad son gomosis y pudrición de ramas y tronco. Solo el 18,75 % de los productores implementa algún tipo de manejo o control específico a través de fungicidas químicos y minerales. Conclusiones. Para los productores de mango de Actopan, Veracruz, la muerte descendente es una enfermedad de alta importancia en el cultivo. Los productores implementan estrategias básicas de manejo; no obstante, estas no han sido eficientes, lo que motiva el interés en desarrollar nuevas y mejores herramientas de control.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction.  Dieback is a severe disease reported in mango-producing regions of Mexico; however, there is limited information regarding growers&#8217; perception and management of this disease. Objective. To assess mango growers&#8217; perception and management practices regarding dieback disease in the municipality of Actopan, Veracruz, Mexico, while describing their socioeconomic and production characteristics. Materials and methods. The research was conducted in the municipality of Actopan, Veracruz, Mexico, during 2021-2022. Semi-structured interviews consisting of 45 questions were conducted with mango growers. The study addressed growers&#8217; socioeconomic characteristics, orchard management practices, recurring diseases, and their perception and management of mango dieback. Data analysis was performed using various multivariate and descriptive statistical tools. Results. Most mango growers were men (94 %) with a wide age range, predominantly consisting of elderly and young adults. Cluster analysis revealed three distinct groups of producers: small (56 %), medium (16 %), and large (28 %), each with specific characteristics regarding cultivated area, agronomic management, and yield (M = 8.54 ± 3.75 t/ha). Dieback was recognized by all interviewed growers, who identified gummosis, branch rot, and trunk rot as the main symptoms associated with the disease. Only 18.75 % of growers implement specific management or control measures through chemical and mineral fungicides. Conclusions. For mango growers in Actopan, Veracruz, dieback represents a disease of major importance in their cultivation. While growers implement basic management strategies, these have proven inefficient, driving interest in developing new and improved control tools.]]></p></abstract>
