De las cinco especies cultivadas de chile, Capsicum annuum L. es la más importante en el mundo, debido a su alta demanda en las industrias alimentaria, médica y cosmética, entre otras. México tiene la mayor diversidad de tipos cultivados, entre los que destacan jalapeño, guajillo, ancho, serrano y habanero. No obstante, algunos agricultores siembran materiales nativos que deben ser estudiados y preservados, tales como mulato y chilaca. En ciertos casos, como el de chilaca, no existen cultivares comerciales mejorados, por lo que los productores dependen de la semilla que producen. Objetivo. Caracterizar morfológicamente líneas avanzadas de diferentes tipos de C. annuum procedentes del centro de México. Materiales y métodos. El trabajo se llevó a cabo en los ciclos primavera-verano de 2022 y 2023, en el Campo Experimental Bajío, ubicado en Celaya, Guanajuato, México. En 32 líneas avanzadas de ocho tipos de C. annuum, se evaluaron 42 caracteres con base en las directrices de la Unión Internacional para la Protección de las Obtenciones Vegetales y de la guía del Instituto Internacional de Recursos Genéticos. Los datos obtenidos fueron analizados mediante estadística descriptiva y sometidos a un análisis de conglomerados y de correspondencias. Resultados. La variación morfológica mostró que quince caracteres de planta, hoja y fruto fueron determinantes para diferenciar tipos y líneas de chile. Con base en caracteres similares, el análisis clúster permitió ubicarlos en cinco grupos. Los grupos I y III estuvieron conformados por tres tipos de chile, y seis caracteres presentaron los eigenvectores positivos más altos. Conclusiones. La diversidad observada reveló caracteres morfológicos determinantes para distinguir tipos y líneas de chiles, los cuales deben concluir su proceso de mejora genética.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction.  Of the five cultivated pepper species, Capsicum annuum L. is the most important worldwide, due to its high demand in the food, medical, and cosmetic industries, among others. Mexico has the greatest diversity of cultivated types, including jalapeño, guajillo, ancho, serrano, and habanero. However, some farmers grow native materials that should be studied and preserved, such as mulato and chilaca. In certain cases, like chilaca, there are no improved commercial cultivars, so producers depend on the seed they produce. Objective. To morphologically characterize advanced lines of different C. annuum types from central Mexico. Materials and methods. The study was conducted during the spring-summer cycles of 2022 and 2023, at the Bajío Experimental Station, located in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico. In 32 advanced lines of eight C. annuum types, 42 traits were evaluated based on the guidelines of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants and the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute guide. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and subjected to cluster and correspondence analysis. Results. Morphological variation showed that fifteen plant, leaf, and fruit traits were crucial to differentiating pepper types and lines. Based on similar traits, the cluster analysis grouped them into five clusters. Groups I and III included three pepper types, and six traits presented the highest positive eigenvectors. Conclusions. The observed diversity revealed determinant morphological characteristics to distinguish pepper types and lines, which must complete their genetic improvement process.]]></p></abstract>
