En Tamaulipas, México, existen las condiciones ambientales adecuadas para la producción del nopal (Opuntia spp.); sin embargo, los rendimientos son inferiores a la media nacional. Objetivo. Caracterizar el sistema productivo del nopal en la Huasteca Tamaulipeca e identificar los principales problemas que limitan la producción. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un diagnóstico del sistema productivo de nopal en la Huasteca Tamaulipeca por medio de la aplicación de 28 entrevistas de 65 preguntas, divididas en tres apartados: a) identificación del productor, b) caracterización de la unidad de producción familiar, y c) caracterización técnico-productiva y comercialización. Resultados. La edad de los productores osciló entre 37 y 78 años, con una media de 6,5 años de escolaridad. El 32 % de los productores no cuenta con asesoría técnica, el 57,1 % trabaja tierras bajo el régimen ejidal, el 82,1 % vende sus productos a intermediarios y el 100 % no utiliza maquinaria agrícola para sus actividades. Conclusiones. Los productores de nopal de la Huasteca Tamaulipeca son en su mayoría adultos mayores con experiencia en el cultivo de nopal. La producción de nopal en la Huasteca Tamaulipeca se realiza de forma tradicional, de temporal, sin infraestructura y con poco acompañamiento técnico. Los principales problemas detectados fueron los bajos precios debido a la limitada demanda del producto y la falta de asistencia técnica para el manejo del cultivo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction.  In Tamaulipas, Mexico, environmental conditions are suitable for nopal (Opuntia spp.) production; however, yields are lower than the national average. Objective. To characterize the nopal production system in the Huasteca Tamaulipeca region and identify the main issues that limit production. Materials and methods. A diagnosis of the nopal production system in the Huasteca Tamaulipeca region was conducted through 28 interviews with 65 questions, divided into three sections: a) producer identification, b) characterization of the family production unit, and c) technical-productive characterization and commercialization. Results. Producers&#8217; ages ranged from 37 to 78 years, with an average schooling of 6.5 years. A total of 32 % of the producers do not receive technical assistance, 57.1 % work on land under the ejido system (communal land tenure), 82.1 % sell their products to intermediaries, and 100 % do not use agricultural machinery for their activities. Conclusions. Most nopal producers in the Huasteca Tamaulipeca region are older adults with experience in nopal cultivation. Nopal production in the region is carried out traditionally, under rainfed conditions, without infrastructure, and with little technical support. The main issues identified were low prices due to limited product demand and a lack of technical assistance for crop management.]]></p></abstract>
