No obstante, ambos términos tienen un carácter polisémico, lo cual provoca ambigüedad al momento de hablar sobre los constructos a los que hacen referencia. Por ello, a partir de una revisión de las diferentes definiciones acuñadas sobre los términos exclusión y abandono en contextos educativos, el presente ensayo tiene como objetivo identificar en qué condiciones el abandono universitario conlleva a la exclusión educativa. Se parte del concepto general de exclusión social, para luego particularizarlo en su dimensión educativa y relacionarlo con el abandono, de tal forma que se aprecian similitudes, diferencias y asociaciones entre ambos conceptos. La principal conclusión a la que se llega es que la exclusión social y la educativa, más que ser una consecuencia del abandono universitario, es una de sus causas, aunque existen circunstancias en las que un retiro temprano de los estudios universitarios aumenta las posibilidades de exclusión, por lo general esta precede al abandono. Por ello, a nivel universitario, el abandono implica exclusión, en el tanto conlleve a la falta de integración en las actividades económicas y sociales, debido a la carencia de habilidades o competencias y con ello un detrimento progresivo de las condiciones de vida; sin embargo, esto no siempre es el caso, pues existen otras causantes del abandono a nivel superior cuyos efectos no siempre provocan exclusión.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Often in the educational context, the terms dropping out and exclusion are homologated because of the deterioration suffered by the educational systems. However, both terms have a polysemic feature that generates ambiguity regarding the constructs they refer to. Therefore, this essay is a revision of the different definitions that have been coined to describe exclusion and withdrawal in educational contexts, aiming to identify when dropping out is a result of educational exclusion. We begin with the general concept of educational exclusion as the starting point, later spelled out according to its educational dimensions and linked to school withdrawal while appreciating both concepts&#8217; similarities, differences, and concomitances. Our main conclusion is that social and educational exclusion, more than a consequence of dropping out of university, is a cause, even though there are circumstances in which an early withdrawal from university increases the possibility of exclusion that generally comes afterward.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: Os termos exclusão e deserção escolar são muitas vezes equiparados no campo da educação como consequência da deterioração dos sistemas de educação. Entretanto, ambos os termos têm um caráter polissêmico, o que causa ambiguidade quando se fala sobre as construções às quais se referem. Portanto, com base numa revisão das diferentes definições dos termos exclusão e deserção em contextos educacionais, o objetivo deste ensaio é identificar as condições sob as quais a deserção universitária leva à exclusão educacional. Parte do conceito geral de exclusão social, e depois se concentra em sua dimensão educacional e a relaciona com a deserção, de tal forma que as semelhanças, diferenças e associações entre ambos os conceitos possam ser apreciadas. A principal conclusão alcançada é que a exclusão social e educacional, em vez de ser uma consequência da deserção universitária, é uma de suas causas, embora existam circunstâncias em que o abandono precoce dos estudos universitários aumenta as possibilidades de exclusão, em geral precede a deserção. Por isto, em nível universitário, a deserção implica exclusão, na medida em que leva a uma falta de integração em atividades econômicas e sociais, devido à falta de habilidades ou competências e, consequentemente, a uma deterioração progressiva das condições de vida; no entanto, nem sempre é este o caso, pois existem outras causas de deserção em nível de ensino superior cujos efeitos nem sempre levam à exclusão.]]></p></abstract>
