(Métodos)  Se incluyeron análisis primarios que estudiaron la relación del consumo de proteína con la sarcopenia o sus componentes por separado (baja masa y fuerza muscular; así como menor rendimiento físico) en personas adultas mayores de 60 años. Se excluyeron estudios que no presentaron diseño de investigación, estudios con otras intervenciones nutricionales y estudios en personas ancianas con diagnóstico para sarcopenia distinto al definido por el Grupo Europeo de Trabajo en Sarcopenia en Personas Mayores, con otras comorbilidades o con tratamiento farmacológico. La búsqueda sistemática se realizó en cuatro bases de datos, empleando palabras clave en combinación con operadores booleanos.  (Resultados)  De los 15 estudios incluidos, 6 transversales y 1 de cohorte se encontró una asociación significativa entre el bajo consumo proteico y el mayor riesgo de sarcopenia, tres estudios no hallaron una asociación significativa. Además, tres ensayos controlados (ECA) no detectaron mejoras significativas en un grupo intervención con suplemento de proteína comparado con un grupo control en los componentes de la sarcopenia. Solo un estudio controlado aleatorio y un estudio de análisis de datos secundarios encontraron mejoras significativas en el grupo intervención sobre la masa muscular.  (Conclusiones)  El bajo consumo de proteína se asoció significativamente con un mayor desarrollo de sarcopenia y una menor masa muscular. Esta asociación no fue observada sobre los componentes de la sarcopenia por separado.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  (Objective)  Assess whether low protein intake is related to the development of sarcopenia in older adults.  (Methods)  This paper included primary studies focused on the relationship between protein intake and sarcopenia or its individual components (low muscle mass and strength and lower physical performance) in adults older than 60 years. The following studies were excluded: projects with no research design, studies with other nutritional interventions, and studies in older individuals with a sarcopenia diagnosis different than the one defined by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in the Older People, with other comorbidities, or with pharmacological treatment. A systematic search was conducted in four databases, utilizing keywords in combination with Boolean operators.  (Results)  Out of the 15 studies included, 6 cross-sectional studies and 1 cohort study identified a significant association between low protein intake and an increased risk of sarcopenia, while 3 studies reported no significant association. Furthermore, 3 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) found no significant improvements in the sarcopenia-related components for the protein-supplemented intervention group compared to the control group. Only one randomized controlled study and one secondary data analysis study demonstrated significant improvements in muscle mass within the intervention group.  (Conclusions)  Low protein intake was significantly associated with a greater development of sarcopenia and lower muscle mass. This association was not observed on individual sarcopenia-related components.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo  (Objetivo)  Avaliar se a baixa ingestão de proteínas está associada ao desenvolvimento de sarcopenia em idosos.  (Métodos)  Foram incluídas análises primárias que estudaram a associação da ingestão de proteínas com a sarcopenia ou seus componentes separados (baixa massa e força muscular, bem como desempenho físico reduzido) em idosos com 60 anos ou mais. Foram excluídos estudos que não apresentaram desenho de pesquisa, estudos com outras intervenções nutricionais e estudos em idosos com diagnóstico de sarcopenia diferente do definido pelo Grupo de Trabalho Europeu sobre Sarcopenia em Pessoas Idosas, com outras comorbidades ou com tratamento farmacológico. A pesquisa sistemática foi realizada em quatro bancos de dados, usando palavras-chave em combinação com operadores booleanos.  (Resultados)  Dos 15 estudos incluídos, 6 transversais e 1 de coorte encontrou-se uma associação significativa entre a baixa ingestão de proteínas e o aumento do risco de sarcopenia; três estudos não encontraram associação significativa. Além disso, três estudos controlados (RCTs) não detectaram melhorias significativas em um grupo de intervenção suplementado com proteína em comparação com um grupo de controle nos componentes da sarcopenia. Apenas um estudo controlado e randomizado e um estudo de análise de dados secundários encontraram melhorias significativas no grupo de intervenção em relação à massa muscular.  (Conclusões)  A baixa ingestão de proteínas foi significativamente associada ao aumento do desenvolvimento de sarcopenia e à redução da massa muscular. Essa associação não foi observada para os componentes individuais da sarcopenia.]]></p></abstract>
