En el año 2013 se realizó una campaña de muestreo en 13 playas en la costa Pacífica, y cinco en la costa caribeña. El país fue dividido en cuatro zonas Pacífico Norte (PN), Pacífico Central (PC), Pacífico Sur (PS) y Caribe Sur (CS). Se analizaron ocho metales pesados en muestras de agua de mar (Mn, Cd, Co, Fe, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb) mediante espectrometría de absorción atómica, además los parámetros fisicoquímicos (pH y temperatura) in situ. El pH fue significativamente más básico en el PN (P=0.0001), y se midió una diferencia de temperatura de hasta 3°C entre la costa del Pacífico y la del Caribe. La zona del PC presentó concentraciones significativamente mayores para metales como el Pb, Cr, y Fe. Las concentraciones más altas de metales como Pb y Cr fueron obtenidas en la cercanía de desembocaduras de ríos y desfogues, lo cual indica los aportes que los cuerpos de agua están realizando y la influencia de las zonas urbanas. Este estudio exploratorio encontró concentraciones de metales que exceden los límites máximos establecidos en la normativa de países como: Chile, Argentina y Perú, evidenciando la necesidad de fijar los estándares de calidad de agua en estos espacios para la seguridad y protección de la salud humana del turismo y las diferentes actividades que se desarrollan.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Costa Rica has a legal gap in terms of the regulations to control the seawater quality in recreational beaches, so the present investigation aimed to create a exploratory study of heavy metals concentrations in recreational beaches in Costa Rica. In 2013, a monitoring campaign was carried out on thirteen beaches on the Pacific coast, and five beaches on the Caribbean coast. The country was divided into four zones North Pacific (PN), Central Pacific (PC), South Pacific (PS) and Southern Caribbean (CS). Eight heavy metals (Mn, Cd, Co, Fe, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb) were analyzed in seawater samples by absorption spectrometry, and the physicochemical characteristics (pH and temperature) were measured in situ. The pH was significantly more basic in the PN (P=0. 0001), and a temperature difference of up to 3°C between the Pacific and Caribbean coasts was registered. The PC showed the highest concentrations for metals such as Pb, Cr, and Fe. The highest concentrations of metals such as Pb and Cr were found near river mouths and wastewater discharges, indicating the contributions that water bodies are making and the influence of urban areas. This research achieved to develop a monitoring campaign and found concentration of heavy metals that exceed the limits established by law in other countries such as: Chile, Argentina and Peru, and evidences the need to regulate quality standards in these spaces for the safety of the human health of tourism and the different activities that are developed.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo Na Costa Rica existe um vazio legal no que diz respeito ao controle da qualidade da água do mar em praias de lazer, por isso esta pesquisa propôs um estudo exploratório da concentração de metais pesados nesta matriz. Em 2013, foi realizada uma campanha de amostragem em 13 praias da costa do Pacífico e cinco da costa do Caribe. O país foi dividido em quatro zonas: Pacífico Norte (PN), Pacífico Central (PC), Pacífico Sul (PS) e Caribe Sul (SC). Foram analisados oito metais pesados em amostras de água do mar (Mn, Cd, Co, Fe, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb) por espectrometria de absorção atômica, além dos parâmetros físico-químicos (pH e temperatura) in situ. O pH foi significativamente mais básico no NP (P=0,0001), e uma diferença de temperatura de até 3°C foi medida entre as costas do Pacífico e do Caribe. A área do PC apresentou concentrações significativamente maiores de metais como Pb, Cr e Fe. As maiores concentrações de metais como Pb e Cr foram obtidas próximas às fozes e desembocaduras dos rios, o que indica as contribuições que os corpos hídricos estão realizando. influência das áreas urbanas.
