La zona de amortiguamiento del Parque Internacional La Amistad, Reserva de la Biosfera de la UNESCO y Patrimonio de la Humanidad, enfrenta incendios forestales recurrentes que no han sido estudiados a fondo. Objetivo: Localizar los incendios históricos en la zona y evaluar su relación con variables geográficas. Métodos: Analizamos datos satelitales y de campo para el período 2012-2020. Resultados: La mayoría de los incendios se produjeron por encima de los 1600 m; las pendientes pronunciadas facilitan la rápida propagación del fuego y las áreas más planas contribuyen a la acumulación de combustible. Los pastizales exacerban la severidad y propagación del fuego, a menudo en relación con la limpieza de terrenos cerca de los asentamientos. Las limitaciones de acceso y las restricciones territoriales son fuertes. Ujarrás experimentó el mayor impacto (24.617 hectáreas); los núcleos de incendios recurrentes están en Ujarrás, seguido de Salitre y Cabagra. Conclusiones: La tecnología satelital proporcionó datos esenciales e identificó áreas de difícil acceso afectadas por la abundancia de vegetación seca y cercanía de poblados.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Introduction: Forest fires significantly affect ecosystems, altering vegetation, carbon cycles, and climate patterns. The buffer zone of La Amistad International Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, faces recurring forest fires that have not been thoroughly studied. Objective: To locate the historical fires in the area and assess their relationship with geographical variables. Methods: We analyzed satellite and field data for 2012-2020. Results: Most fires were above 1600m; steep inclines facilitate rapid fire spread while flatter areas contribute fuel accumulation. Grasslands exacerbate fire severity and spread, often related to land clearing near settlements. Access limitations and territorial restrictions are strong. Ujarrás experienced the largest impact (24,617 hectares); hotspots of recurring fires affected Ujarrás, with moderate occurrences in Salitre and Cabagra. Conclusions: Satellite technology provided essential data and identified hard to reach areas affected because of dry vegetation and human activity.]]></p></abstract>
