Existe limitada información sobre volúmenes de importación, uso, destino ambiental y efectos en la salud humana de los plaguicidas en El Salvador. Objetivo. Identificar la tendencia de importación, asi como la participación relativa de cada ingrediente activo en el volumen global importado de plaguicidas, durante el periodo comprendido entre 2013 y 2021. Materiales y métodos. Se clasificaron los registros de importación de plaguicidas proveídos por la Unidad de Registro y Fiscalización de Importaciones del Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería de El Salvador (MAG), por ingrediente activo (i.a.), entre el 1 de enero de 2013 hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2021. Para cada evento de importación se calculó la cantidad neta de cada i.a. según la ficha técnica del producto comercial. Cada i.a. fue incluido, según sus propiedades, en una de las siguientes categorías: herbicidas, fumigantes y desinfectantes de suelo, insecticidas-nematicidas, fungicidas-bactericidas, molusquicidas y rodenticidas. Resultados. Los herbicidas se importaron en mayor volumen, seguidos por los fumigantes y desinfectantes de suelo, insecticidas-nematicidas, fungicidas-bactericidas, molusquicidas y rodenticidas. Los herbicidas más importados fueron en orden descendiente 2,4-D, paraquat, glifosato y atrazina; en fumigantes y desinfectantes de suelo, bromuro de metilo, fosfuro de aluminio y metam sodio; en fungicidas-bactericidas, mancozeb, clorotalonil, carbendazim y propineb; en insecticidas-nematicidas, clorpirifos, cipermetrina, terbufos, y malatión; en molusquicidas, metaldehído; y en rodenticidas coumatetralil y difacinona. Conclusiones. De 2013 a 2021, entre los i.a. más importados por unidad de volumen destacó el incremento de glifosato, clorpirifos, clorotalonil y mancozeb; mientras decrecieron las de terbufos. Otros i.a. tuvieron menor variación, se importaron en menores volúmenes o ya no se importan en el contexto de regulación internacional al comercio y uso de sustancias químicas y demanda de mercado.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction.  There is limited information on pesticide import volumes, usage, environmental fate, and effects on human health of pesticides in El Salvador. Objective. To identify the import trends and the relative contribution of each active ingredient to the global volume of imported pesticides during the period between 2013 and 2021. Materials and methods. Pesticide import records provided by the Registration Import and Import Control Unit of the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería of El Salvador (MAG) were classified by active ingredient (a.i.), for the period from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2021. For each import event, the net quantity of each a.i. was calculated based on the technical specifications of the commercial product. Each a.i. was categorized according to its properties into one of the following groups: herbicides, fumigants and soil disinfectants, insecticides-nematicides, fungicides-bactericides, molluscicides, and rodenticides. Results. Herbicides were imported in the highest volumes, followed by fumigants and soil disinfectants, insecticides-nematicides, fungicides-bactericides, molluscicides, and rodenticides. The most imported herbicides, in descending order, were 2,4-D, paraquat, glyphosate, and atrazine; for fumigants and soil disinfectants, methyl bromide, aluminum phosphide, and metam sodium; for fungicides-bactericides, mancozeb, chlorothalonil, carbendazim, and propineb; for insecticides-nematicides, chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, terbufos, and malathion; for molluscicides, metaldehyde; and for rodenticides, coumatetralyl and diphacinone. Conclusions. From 2013 to 2021, among the most imported a.i. by volume, there was a notable increase in glyphosate, chlorpyrifos, chlorothalonil, and mancozeb, while terbufos imports declined. Other a.i. showed minor variations, were imported in smaller volumes, or are no longer imported due to international regulations on the trade and use of chemicals, as well as market demand.]]></p></abstract>
