Se obtuvieron los siguientes resultados: 2/30 (6,6%) sueros fueron positivos para C. trachomatis y 8/30 sueros fueron positivos para C. pneumoniae (26.6%). Es la primera vez que se establece la presencia de C. pneumoniae en Costa Rica. Se discuten estos resultados en relación con los resultados de estudios por bacterias y virus, edad y diagnóstico de los pacientes.]]></p></abstract>

Teresita Somogyi<A NAME="*a"></A><A HREF="#*">*</A>&nbsp; y&nbsp; Dr. Wilber Alfaro<A HREF="#**">**</A></FONT></FONT></B></CENTER>      <CENTER><B><FONT FACE="Arial"><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT></FONT></B>&nbsp;</CENTER>      <CENTER><B><FONT FACE="Arial"><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT></FONT></B>&nbsp;</CENTER> <B><FONT FACE="Arial"><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT></FONT></B>      <P><B><FONT FACE="Arial"><FONT SIZE=-1>Introducci&oacute;n</FONT></FONT></B>     <CENTER><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT></CENTER> <FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><I><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae)</FONT></I><B> </B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">fue aislada por primera vez en 1965 y r&aacute;pidamente se asocia como una causa com&uacute;n de infecci&oacute;n del tracto respiratorio, responsable de 6% a 10% de la neumon&iacute;a adquirida en la comunidad(<A HREF="#14">14</A>). Reportes recientes sit&uacute;an a C. <I>pneumoniae </I>entre los tres agentes etiol&oacute;gicos m&aacute;s comunes de neumon&iacute;a adquirida en la comunidad. Se asocia con cuadros de sinusitis y de faringitis, y est&aacute; tambi&eacute;n involucrada en enfermedades cr&oacute;nicas como bronquitis, enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva y asma(<A HREF="#3">3</A>, <A HREF="#5">5</A>, <A HREF="#9">9</A>, <A HREF="#10">10</A>, <A HREF="#16">16</A>). La infecci&oacute;n es, por lo general, leve o asintom&aacute;tica pero puede ser severa, especialmente en los ancianos, probablemente debido a la presencia de enfermedades de fondo, alteraciones en la actividad mucociliar y disminuci&oacute;n de la respuesta inmune. En diversos estudios, alrededor del 10% de los casos de neumon&iacute;a y cerca del 5% de los casos de bronquitis y sinusitis en adultos pudieron ser atributos a este agente(<A HREF="#7">7</A>).</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">El hombre es el &uacute;nico reservorio conocido de C. <I>pneumoniae</I>. Este microorganismo se transmite de persona a persona por v&iacute;a respiratoria y tiene un periodo de incubaci&oacute;n de 7 a 21 d&iacute;as. Se ha reportado la coinfecci&oacute;n con virus (influenza y virus respiratorio sincisial) as&iacute; como con otros agentes bacterianos(<A HREF="#8">8</A>).</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Estudios seroepidemiol&oacute;gicos muestran que la mayor&iacute;a de las primoinfecciones ocurren durante la edad preescolar y escolar, entre los 5 y 14 a&ntilde;os de edad. Entre los adultos la seroprevalencia es de 40% a 70%(<A HREF="#1">1</A>, <A HREF="#6">6</A>). Esta alta tasa de seroprevalencia se presenta a pesar de que la primoinfecci&oacute;n induce una respuesta de anticuerpos que perdura por 3 a 5 a&ntilde;os, lo que sugiere que la mayor&iacute;a de las personas pueden infectarse y reinfectarse durante la vida(<A HREF="#16">16</A>).</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">C.<I> pneumoniae</I> tiene una distribuci&oacute;n mundial; sin embargo, la prevalencia de la infecci&oacute;n por este microorganismo puede variar de regi&oacute;n a regi&oacute;n(<A HREF="#4">4</A>). Estudios con sueros de adultos de diversas &aacute;reas del mundo han mostrado una prevalencia mayor en los pa&iacute;ses tropicales, menos desarrollados, con respecto a los pa&iacute;ses del norte, m&aacute;s desarrollados, quienes presentan seroprevalencias menores. Hay cierta evidencia que sugiere que la infecci&oacute;n en ni&ntilde;os menores de 5 a&ntilde;os podr&iacute;a ser no s&oacute;lo m&aacute;s com&uacute;n sino m&aacute;s severa en los pa&iacute;ses tropicales(<A HREF="#18">18</A>). Estudios en Europa han mostrado cambios c&iacute;clicos en la incidencia, es decir, 2 a 3 a&ntilde;os de alta incidencia seguidos de 3 a 4 a&ntilde;os de baja incidencia.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">No se han publicado a&uacute;n ensayos controlados respecto al tratamiento de esta infecci&oacute;n. La eritromicina, la tetraciclina y la doxiciclina han demostrado tener una buena actividad<I> in vitro</I> contra este agente, y se recomiendan como la terapia de primera elecci&oacute;n(<A HREF="#15">15</A>). Este microorganismo no es sensible <I>in vitro</I> a drogas como penicilina, ampicilina o sulfonamidas. La claritomicina y la azitromicina han demostrado ser efectivas in vitro(<A HREF="#7">7</A>, <A HREF="#19">19</A>).</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><I>C. pneumoniae</I> crece mal en cultivo celular; sin embargo, en la actualidad se han introducido modificaciones a la t&eacute;cnica de aislamiento en cultivo lo que ha permitido aumentar la probabilidad de aislamiento(<A HREF="#12">12</A>). Dado que este microorganismo induce una adecuada respuesta serol&oacute;gica se prefiere esta metodolog&iacute;a para realizar el diagn&oacute;stico de rutina(<A HREF="#11">11</A>). La presencia de anticuerpos IgA especie-espec&iacute;ficos se prefiere como indicador de infecciones clamidiales activas, cr&oacute;nicas y recurrentes. Adem&aacute;s estudios cl&iacute;nicos sugieren un alto grado de correlaci&oacute;n entre la detecci&oacute;n de IgA anti-clamidia y la presencia de ant&iacute;geno clamidial. La t&eacute;cnica de referencia es la microinmunofluorescencia; sin embargo enla actualidad se han adaptado otras t&eacute;cnicas m&aacute;s sencillas y que ofrecen tambi&eacute;n una excelente sensibilidad y especificidad.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">El presente estudio reporta por primera vez la evidencia de infecci&oacute;n por <I>Chlamydia pneumoniae</I> en Costa Rica en una poblaci&oacute;n pedi&aacute;trica mediante la detecci&oacute;n de anticuerpos espec&iacute;ficos IgA en suero de fase aguda.</FONT></FONT>     <BR><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT></FONT></B>&nbsp;<B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT></FONT></B>      <P><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><FONT SIZE=-1>Materiales y m&eacute;todos</FONT></FONT></B>     <BR><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Poblaci&oacute;n</FONT></B></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Se estudiaron 30 pacientes admintidos al Hospital Nacional de Ni&ntilde;os (HNN) "Dr. Carlos S&aacute;enz Herrera" durante el periodo compledido entre el 1&ordm; de marzo y el 31 de octubre de 1997.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Los pacientes ten&iacute;an edades comprendidas entre los 7 d&iacute;as y los 28 meses y presetaban en su mayor&iacute;a diferentes patolog&iacute;as respiratorias. Se incluy&oacute; tambi&eacute;n un paciente de 17 a&ntilde;os y 8 meses con fibrosis qu&iacute;stica procedente de la provincia de Lim&oacute;n.</FONT></FONT>     <BR><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT>     <BR><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT>     <BR><FONT SIZE=-1><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Muestra</FONT></B></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Se obtuvo de cada pciente una muestra de sangre sin anticoagulante y se separ&oacute; el suero. Las muestras se mantuvieron a-20&ordm;C hasta an&aacute;lisis.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Adem&aacute;s, de los pacientes en estudio se obtuvo alguna de las siguientes muestras respiratorias: aspirado nasofar&iacute;ngeo, aspirado bronquial o aspirado traqueal. Estas muestras fueron procesadas para determinar la presencia de bacterias aerobias y de virus respiratorios.</FONT></FONT>     <BR><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT>     <BR><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT>     <BR><FONT SIZE=-1><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Metodolog&iacute;a</FONT></B></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">La determinaci&oacute;n serol&oacute;gica de clamidias se realiz&oacute; mediante el ensayo inmunoenzim&aacute;tico Chlamydia Bivalente trachomatis/pneumoniae IgA fabricante (Immunocomb<IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/rmhnn/v34s0/Reg.GIF" HEIGHT=20 WIDTH=15><SUP> </SUP>II) (Orgenics, Israel) y se procedi&oacute; de acuerdo con las instrucciones del fabricante. Las muestras consideradas como positivas (t&iacute;tulo mayor o igual a 1/8 fueron confirmadas mediante microinmunofluorescencia indirecta (MRL Diagnoistics, California, USA) de acuerdo con las instrucciones del fabricante. Este &uacute;ltima permite diferenciar entre las 3 especies de clamidias (<I>C. trachomatis, C. pneumoniae, C.psittaci</I>).</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>

<body><![CDATA[<P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">La presencia de bacterias aerobias se determin&oacute; de la siguiente manera: las muestras se inocularon en placas de agar chocolate, agar sangre, agar McConkery, agar Manitol salado y caldo de tioglicolato.&nbsp; Todas las placas&nbsp; se incubaron a 35 <SUP>o </SUP>Cpor 24 horas lo mismo que el caldo de tioglicolato. Las placas<SUP> </SUP>de agar chocolate y agar sangre se incubaron en jarra con candela para obtener una atm&oacute;sfera de CO2 entre el 5-10%. A las 24 horas se realizaron las lecturas y en las placas en donde hab&iacute;a crecimiento bacteriano se procedi&oacute; a efectuar una tinci&oacute;n de Gram y con base en &eacute;sta se inici&oacute; la identificaci&oacute;n de los microorganismos presentes utilizando el sistema Vitek (BioMerieux, Missouri, USA) de acuerdo con las instrucciones del fabricante. Para la identificaci&oacute;n de bacilos Gram negativos se emplearon tarjetas GNI. Se utiliz&oacute; la tarjeta GPI para la identificaci&oacute;n de cocos Gram positivos, en particular los catalasa positivos. La identificaci&oacute;n de levaduras se realiz&oacute; con la tarjeta YBC.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Las placas negativas fueron reincubadas 24 horas m&aacute;s a 35&deg; C antes de ser descartadas como negativas. Los tubos de caldo de tiogliocolato que presentaron evidencia de crecimiento fueron inoculados en placas de agar sangre, agar McConkey y agar Manitol salado y se procedi&oacute; a la identificaci&oacute;n de las colonias observadas de la misma forma que se mencion&oacute; previamente.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">La identificaci&oacute;n de virus respiratorios se realiz&oacute; mediante la detecci&oacute;n de ant&iacute;genos virales por la t&eacute;cnica de inmunofluorescencia(<A HREF="#2">2</A>). Se analiz&oacute; la presencia de los siguientes virus: Influenza A y B, Parainfluenza 1, 2 y 3, Virus Respiratorio Sincicial (VRS) y Adenovirus. Se emplearon los reactivos de la casa Diagnostics Pasteur (Francia) y se procedi&oacute; de acuerdo con las instrucciones del fabricante.</FONT></FONT>     <BR><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT></FONT></B>&nbsp;<B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT></FONT></B>      <P><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><FONT SIZE=-1>Resultados</FONT></FONT></B><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Se estudiaron 30 sueros para determinar la presencia de anticuerpos de tipo IgA para <I>C. trachomatis</I> y/<I>o C. pneumoniae.</I> Los t&iacute;tulos de anticuerpos mayores o iguales a 1/8 para <I>C. trachomatis</I> mediante el empleo de la t&eacute;cnica Immunocomb<IMG SRC="/img/fbpe/rmhnn/v34s0/Reg.GIF" HEIGHT=20 WIDTH=15>&nbsp; II indican una posible infecci&oacute;n activa o cr&oacute;nica por este microorganismo. En el caso de <I>C. pneuoniae</I> se emple&oacute; el mismo criterio, valores mayores o iguales a 1/8 como indicadores de infecci&oacute;n activa ya que estos resultados fueron confirmados mediante la t&eacute;cnica de microinmunofluorescencia indirecta (MRL Diagnostics).</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      
<P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Se obtuvo un total de 10 sueros positivos lo que representa una prevalencia del 33,3% para <I>Chlamydia </I>sp. De estos sueros, 2/30 (6,6%) fueron positivos para <I>C. trachomatis</I> con t&iacute;tulos de 1/8 y 1/64 respectivamente. Para <I>C. pneumoniae</I> se obtuvieron 26,6% (8/30) sueros positivos con los siguientes t&iacute;tulos: 6 sueros con t&iacute;tulos de 1/8 y 2 con t&iacute;tulo de 1/16. Ninguno de los pacientes fue positivo simult&aacute;neamente para ambos agentes bacterianos.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Los pacientes estudiados ten&iacute;an edades comprendidas entre los 7 d&iacute;as y los 28 meses con un promedio de 6,3 meses. Los pacientes que presentan anticuerpos IgA para clamidias ten&iacute;an edades comprendidas entre los 28 d&iacute;as y los 6,5 meses con un promedio de 2,8 meses.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">En el <A HREF="#CUADRO 1">Cuadro 1</A> se presentan los resultados de la determinaci&oacute;n de anticuerpos IgA para clamidias en relaci&oacute;n con la edad y el diagn&oacute;stico del paciente.</FONT></FONT>     <BR><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT>     ]]></body>

<body><![CDATA[<BR><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; ***&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; BQL: bronquiolitis</FONT></FONT>     <BR><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">De los 10 pacientes con serolog&iacute;a positiva para clamidias, se observa que 5 ten&iacute;an un diagn&oacute;stico de s&iacute;ndrome de insuficiencia respiratoria (50%), 3 ten&iacute;an diagn&oacute;stico de bronconeumon&iacute;a (30%) y los 2 restantes presentaban un diagn&oacute;stico de bronquiolitis y de neutropenia, respectivamente. Los pacientes cuya serolog&iacute;a para clamidias fue negativa presentaban los siguientes diagn&oacute;sticos: un 50% ten&iacute;an un diagn&oacute;stico de s&iacute;ndrome de insuficiencia respiratoria, 40% diagn&oacute;stico de bronconeumon&iacute;a, 15% diagn&oacute;stico de Croup 25% con otro diagn&oacute;stico no relacionados con patolog&iacute;a respiratoria en el momento del estudio.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">En todos los casos se determin&oacute; la presencia de bacterias aerobias en las muestras respiratorias. De los pacientes con serolog&iacute;a positiva por clamidias se obtuvieron 5 aislamientos positivos y en 5 pacientes no se aislaron otros microorganismos. Las bacterias aisladas fueron <I>K. pneumoniae</I> (3 pacientes)<I>, E. coli</I> y <I>E. cloacae</I> (2 pacientes), <I>E. faecalis</I> y <I>S. aureus</I> (1 paciente).</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">El estudio de virus respiratorios demostr&oacute; la presencia de VRS en 3 pacientes, los resultados fueron negativos en 5 pacientes y en 2 de ellos no se pudo realizar. <body><![CDATA[<P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">En el caso de los 20 pacientes con serolog&iacute;a negativa para clamidias se obtuvo que en 80% (16/20) se aisl&oacute; al menos una bacteria aerobia y 10% (2/20)&nbsp; fueron positivos para el VRS.&nbsp; En 4 casos no se pudo realizar la determinaci&oacute;n de virus.&nbsp; S&oacute;lo 5% (1/20) pacientes&nbsp; fueron negativos tanto por bacterias como por virus.</FONT></FONT>     <BR><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT></FONT></B>&nbsp;<B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT></FONT></B>      <P><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><FONT SIZE=-1>Discusi&oacute;n</FONT></FONT></B>     <CENTER><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT></CENTER> <FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica"><I>C. peumoniae</I> es un pat&oacute;geno importante asociado con infecciones respiratorias agudas en el hombre, especialmente neumon&iacute;a y bronquitis (<A HREF="#7">7</A>, <A HREF="#11">11</A>, <A HREF="#13">13</A>, <A HREF="#16">16</A>). Esta infecci&oacute;n es com&uacute;n y aproximadamente 50% de los adultos alrededor del mundo presentan anticuerpos contra este agente y cerca del 10% de los casos de neumon&iacute;a adquirida en la comunidad son atribuidos a <I>C. pneumoniae</I>(<A HREF="#4">4</A>, <A HREF="#11">11</A>, <A HREF="#16">16</A>, <A HREF="#17">17)</A>.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">En el presente estudio se establece por primera vez la presencia de <I>C. pneumoniae</I> en una poblaci&oacute;n pedi&aacute;trica en Costa Rica con una prevalencia de 26,6% para anticuerpos IgA. Otro estudio en curso sugiere una prevalencia de 59% para C<I>.</I> <I>pneumoniae</I> mediante la detecci&oacute;n de anticuerpos IgG en una poblaci&oacute;n pedi&aacute;trica (datos no mostrados). Actualmente se est&aacute;n realizando estudios en nuestro pa&iacute;s para determinar la seroprevalencia de <I>C.</I> <I>pneumoniae </I>en la poblaci&oacute;n general y se ha observado que aproximadamente 50% de la poblaci&oacute;n estudiada presenta anticuerpos IgG y 20% anticuerpos IgA contra <I>C.</I> <I>pneumoniae</I> (datos no mostrados).</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Esta prevalencia correlaciona con la demostrada en otros estudios; sin embargo, el grupo etario afectado en este estudio presenta una edad promedio, mucho menor (2, 8 meses) con respecto a lo que se reporta para la mayor&iacute;a de los pa&iacute;ses (mayores de 5 a&ntilde;os). Esto se debe probablemente al grupo etario seleccionado para este estudio. En otro grupo de poblaci&oacute;n (1 a&ntilde;o 2 meses a 9 a&ntilde;os 5 meses) se obtubo una edad promedio de 3,5 a&ntilde;os (resultados no mostrados). Estos resultados sugieren nuevamente una infecci&oacute;n a una edad m&aacute;s temprana. Sin embargo, Sikku et al. (<A HREF="#18">18</A>), han sugerido la posibilidad de que esta infecci&oacute;n se presente a una edad m&aacute;s temprana en ni&ntilde;os de pa&iacute;ses tropicales y menos desarrollados. Actualmente se est&aacute; realizando un estudio que abarca una poblaci&oacute;n de todas las edades con el fin de poder establecer cu&aacute;l es la edad de la primoinfecci&oacute;n en nuestro pa&iacute;s y sus implicaciones cl&iacute;nicas.</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Un 90% de los pacientes con serolog&iacute;a para <I>C. pneumoniae</I> presentan un cuadro respiratorio agudo y en 30% de los casos se estableci&oacute; el diang&oacute;stico de neumon&iacute;a. En el caso de pacientes con serolog&iacute;a negativa se estableci&oacute; que un 75% presentaban un cuadro respiratorio agudo. Sin embargo, es importante se&ntilde;alar que dos pacientes con infecci&oacute;n respiratoria aguda presentan como &uacute;nico hallazgo de laboratorio la serolog&iacute;a positiva por <I>C.</I> <I>pneumoniae</I> (fueron negativos tanto por otras bacterias como por virus). As&iacute; mismo un paciente fue diagnosticado positivo por el VRS y negativo por bacterias, y presentaba una serolog&iacute;a positiva para <I>C. pneumoniae</I>. En estos 3 casos el diagn&oacute;stico de clamidias pudo haber contribuido enormemente en el manejo de estos pacientes. Esto es igualmente cierto en todos los casos en donde se reporta la etiolog&iacute;a de clamidias en infecciones del tracto respiratorio ya que se ha establecido un manejo terape&uacute;tico espec&iacute;fico para estas infecciones(<A HREF="#8">8</A>, <A HREF="#9">9</A>).</FONT></FONT><FONT SIZE=-1></FONT>      <P><FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Es urgente establecer el papel de <I>C. pneumoniae</I> en las infecciones respiratorias en nuestra poblaci&oacute;n as&iacute; como implementar este diagn&oacute;stico de rutina. <body><![CDATA[<CENTER><FONT SIZE=-1>&nbsp;</FONT></CENTER> <FONT SIZE=-1><FONT FACE="Arial,Helvetica">Se determin&oacute; la presencia de anticuerpos (IgA) contra <I>Chlamydia pneumoniae </I>y <I>Chlamydia trachomatis</I> en el suero de 30 ni&ntilde;os admitidos al Hospital Nacional de Ni&ntilde;os por infecciones en el tracto respiratorio con edades entre los 7 d&iacute;as y los 28 meses. Se obtuvieron los siguientes resultados: 2/30 (6,6%) sueros fueron positivos para <I>C. trachomatis</I> y 8/30 sueros fueron positivos para <I>C. pneumoniae</I> (26.6%). Es la primera vez que se establece la presencia de <I>C. pneumoniae</I> en Costa Rica.
