Esta enfermedad puede ser reconocida a través de los síntomas de necrosis angular, deformación foliar, senectud tardía y ausencia de vainas. Inicialmente, se le denominó ''falsa mancha angular'' a los síntomas de necrosis angular. Además, de manera errónea, la deformación foliar fue diagnosticada como un ataque viral. Ante tal ambiguedad, este trabajo establece y describe los síntomas del amachamiento del frijol común. Con base en la literatura, trabajo de campo y experiencia de los productores de frijol, se analizó el tejido de frijol para describir los síntomas del amachamiento. Entre 2014 y 2015, se visitaron 24 fincas ubicadas dentro del territorio de Costa Rica (Provincias de San José y Puntarenas), de cada finca se colectó material vegetal. La deformación foliar es el síntoma predominante, presente en el 83% de las plantas; mientras que la necrosis angular en el 45% de las plantas con amachamiento. La disminución en la cantidad de vainas fue del 46% con respecto a plantas sanas. Por su parte, las plantas con amachamiento senescieron de manera tardía, se cuantificó que las plantas con amachamiento tuvieron en contenido relativo de clorofila mayor (54 SPAD) que plantas sanas (37 SPAD). A través del reconocimiento de los síntomas del amachamiento del frijol, es posible realizar un diagnóstico acertado de la enfermedad.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The ''amachamiento'' of the common bean is caused by the leaf nematode Aphelenchoides besseyi Christie. The disease can be recognized through the symptoms of angular necrotic tissue, foliar deformation, late senescence and pods absence. Initially, the symptoms of angular necrosis were called false angular spot. In addition, incorrectly the leaf deformation was diagnosed as a viral disease. This work establishes and describes the symptoms of ''amachamiento''. Based on the literature, field observations and experience of the bean growers, the bean tissue was analyzed to describe the symptoms. In 2014 and 2015, twenty-four Costa Rican farms were visited (San José and Puntarenas provinces); plant material was collected from each farm. Leaf deformation is the predominant symptom, present in 83% of plants; whereas the angular necrosis in 45% of the plants with ''amachamiento''. The pods number decline was 46% compared to healthy plants. The late senescence was evident in diseased plants, that plants had higher relative chlorophyll content (54 SPAD). The healthy plants had a low chlorophyll content (37 SPAD). Through the recognition of the symptoms of ''amachamiento'', it is possible to have an accurate diagnosis of the disease.]]></p></abstract>
