Son el ingrediente activo de numerosos fármacos, producidos para tratar diferentes enfermedades; muchas de las cuales están relacionadas con el funcionamiento del sistema inmune. Estos medicamentos, antes de ser comercializados, deben cumplir con una serie de requisitos, entre los que se encuentra, la cuantificación de la actividad biológica. Este parámetro se mide a través de ensayos biológicos in vivo e in vitro, siendo estos últimos los más utilizados por su mayor rapidez y versatilidad. Los ensayos in vitro son realizados en locales con todo el equipamiento necesario y el personal con la suficiente experiencia para llevarlos a cabo. Existen muchos factores que pueden influir en la calidad de estos métodos analíticos, los cuales se deben mantener bajo un estricto control para la aprobación final del ensayo. Por tales razones, el objetivo de esta revisión es reunir las bases teóricas para la realización de ensayos in vitro para cuantificar la actividad biológica de citocinas, así como los factores que influyen en la calidad de estos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Cytokines are low molecular weight molecules that play a fundamental role in the inflammatory and immune response and in numerous biological and cellular processes. They are the active ingredient in many drugs, produced to treat different diseases, many of these related to the immune system. These drugs, before being marketed, must meet a series of requirements, among which is the quantification of biological activity. The biological activity of cytokines is measured through in vivo and in vitro biological tests, the latter being the most widely used due to their greater speed and versatility. In vitro tests are carried out in places with all the necessary equipment and personnel with sufficient experience to carry them out. There are many factors that can influence the quality of these analytical methods, which must be kept under strict control for approval. For these reasons, the objective of this review is to gather the theoretical bases for conducting in vitro assays to quantify the biological activity of cytokines, as well as the factors that influence their quality.]]></p></abstract>
