Estas células pueden ser obtenidas a partir de la médula ósea, el tejido adiposo o la sangre de cordón umbilical, lo que ha permitido estudiar sus propiedades estructurales y funcionales. Aun cuando la médula ósea ha sido la principal fuente de las CMM, se ha encontrado que existen aspectos que dificultan su uso, entre ellos una limitada tasa de crecimiento, la variación en la capacidad de diferenciación de acuerdo con la edad del donante y el riesgo del procedimiento para la toma de la muestra. Por ello, los estudios en el tejido adiposo y la sangre de cordón umbilical han aumentado, así como también de los métodos actualmente empleados para la extracción de CMM en todas las fuentes. En la actualidad, se conoce que estas células presentan una gran capacidad inmunomoduladora, por lo que ha generado diversos estudios preclínicos y clínicos para su posible uso como tratamiento en personas con enfermedades autoinmunes y la enfermedad de injerto contra huésped en pacientes trasplantados.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are a type of spindle-shaped pluripotent cells with the ability to differentiate into chondrocytes, osteocytes, and adipocytes, among others. These cells can be obtained from bone marrow, adipose tissue or umbilical cord blood; this fact has allowed to study its structural and functional properties. Although bone marrow has been the main source of MSC, it has been found that there are aspects that hinder its use, including a limited growth rate, variation in the capacity to differentiate according to the bone marrow donor´s age, and risk in the sampling procedure. Therefore, studies in adipose tissue and umbilical cord blood have increased, as well as in methods currently used for the extraction of MSC from all sources. Currently, these cells are known to have a high immunomodulatory capacity; for that reason, this has generated several preclinical and clinical studies for their possible use as treatment in people with autoimmune diseases and graft-versus-host disease in transplant patients.]]></p></abstract>
